Singapore Airlines announced plans to buy up to 31 Boeing 777-300ER airplanes. The order is worth approximately $7.35 billion.
Eighteen planes will be ordered for delivery between 2006 and 2010, and the rest will be subject to the exercise of purchase rights.
General Electric will build the airplanes’ engines. According to GE, the potential value of the engine order for the first 18 aircraft is more than $800 million.
"Singapore Airlines continues to show why it is the best and most profitable airline in the world, becoming the newest and largest 777-300ER customer," said Alan Mulally, president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes. "With this order, SIA also becomes the largest customer for the 777 family, whose efficiency continues to prove to be a key attribute with the current trend in fuel prices.”
When the order is completed, Singapore Airlines' total firm orders for the 777 family of airplanes will stand at 77 airplanes, 55 of which are currently in operation. The Singapore Airlines fleet consists predominantly of Boeing jetliners.
