First-time unemployment claims jump by 10,000

In a reversal of general declining trend, initial unemployment filings jumped 10,000, to 343,000, for the week ending August 21, the US Department of Labor reported today.

Several states, including Pennsylvania, Texas, Michigan, Wisconsin, North Carolina and Illinois reported a drop in manufacturing-sector layoffs for the previous week ending August 14. In what has been a trend in recent weeks, not a single state reported a rise in layoffs for that week.

The current overall unemployment rate is 5.5 percent, reported earlier this month by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics.
