The manufacturing sector had 885 mass layoff events in July, up from 222 in June, according to figures released today by the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the US Department of Labor.
Within manufacturing, the number of first-time unemployment claimants in July was highest in transportation equipment (72,492, mainly automotive-related), followed by plastics and rubber products manufacturing (13,053) and primary metals (8,177).
Employers in all sectors took 2,094 mass layoff actions in July. Each action involved at least 50 persons from a single establishment, and the number of workers involved totaled 253,929.
