New orders, shipments increase

New orders for manufactured durable goods in July increased $3.1 billion, or 1.6 percent, to $195.8 billion, while shipments also increased during the month, according to US Department of Commerce figures released today.

Transportation equipment, up four of the last six months, had the largest increase in new orders: $3.3 billion, or 5.9 percent, to $59.2 billion, due to non-defense aircraft and parts, which increased $6.2 billion. Primary metals, up six of the last seven months, increased $0.9 billion, or 6.3 percent, to $14.9 billion.

New orders for manufactured nondurable goods increased $1.8 billion, or one percent, to $173.9 billion.

Shipments of manufactured durable goods in July, up four of the last six months, increased $0.4 billion, or 0.2 percent, to $197.1 billion. Machinery had the largest increase: $0.7 billion, or three percent, to $25.1 billion. Computers and electronic equipment increased $0.7 billion, or 1.8 percent, to $38.9 billion.

Shipments of manufactured nondurable goods, up 10 of the last 11 months, increased $1.8 billion, or one percent, to $173.9 billion. Petroleum and coal products had the largest increase: $1.8 billion, or 6.8 percent, to $28.6 billion.
