Computer manufacturer IBM plans to recall about 553,000 AC power adapters worldwide for some of its ThinkPad laptop computer models, due to potential fire or electrical shock hazards to consumers.
Approximately 225,000 of the adapters are being recalled in the United States.
The adapters have the potential to overheat, cause damage to the computer’s circuit board and melt through the housing, according to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission. The agency said it received six reports of incidents, which included some property damage, but no reports of injuries associated with the adapters.
The computers were sold between January 1999 and August 2000, and the adapters were manufactured by Taiwanese company Delta Electronics.
