Initial unemployment filings climbed significantly by 16,000, to 333,000, for the week ending September 11, the US Department of Labor reported today.
Florida and Michigan reported a drop in manufacturing-sector layoffs for the previous week ending September 4. In Florida, however, 1,716 unemployment claims were filed that week as a direct result of Hurricane Charley. Texas and Wisconsin reported a rise in manufacturing layoffs for that same week.
The current overall unemployment rate is 5.4 percent, reported earlier this month by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics.
