Merck & Co., Inc. has announced the voluntary withdrawal of Vioxx, the company’s arthritis and acute pain medication. The decision is based on a new three-year clinical trial which revealed an increased risk of heart attack and stroke in patients taking Vioxx.
Merck introduced Vioxx in the US in 1999 and has marketed the drug in as many as 80 other countries with total worldwide sales of $2.5 billion in 2003. The company is uncertain whether the cost of the recall will be recorded in third or fourth quarter reports. Merck has retracted the third quarter estimates previously released.
