First-time unemployment filings spiked by 18,000, to 369,000, for the week ending September 25, the US Department of Labor reported today, continuing an upward trend.
Florida had the largest number of initial claims, reporting 8,797 for the previous week ending September 18—due in large part to the damage inflicted recently by multiple hurricanes. South Carolina, North Carolina and New Jersey also reported a rise in manufacturing layoffs for the same period. No states reported a drop in manufacturing-sector layoffs for that week.
The current overall unemployment rate is 5.4 percent, reported earlier this month by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics.
