New orders down, shipments up

New orders for manufactured durable goods in October decreased $0.9 billion, or 0.4 percent, to $196.3 billion, the Census Bureau of the US Department of Commerce reported today.

This followed a 0.9 percent September increase in new orders. Computers and electronic products, down following two consecutive increases, had the largest decrease, $2.1 billion, or 5.7 percent, to $34.9 billion.

Shipments in October increased $1.3 billion, or 0.6 percent, to $200.5 billion. This followed a 1.1 percent September decrease. Machinery, up four of the last five months, had the largest increase, $1.2 billion, or 4.6 percent, to $26.5 billion.

Unfilled orders in October, up 14 of the last 15 months, increased $3 billion, or 0.6 percent, to $543.2 billion. This followed a 0.9 percent September increase and is at the highest level since April 2001. Computers and electronic products, up eight of the last nine months, had the largest increase, $2.1 billion, or 1.5 percent, to $142 billion.

Inventories in October, up 11 consecutive months, increased $1.5 billion, or 0.5 percent, to $279.4 billion. This followed a 0.3 percent September increase. Primary metals, up 12 consecutive months, had the largest increase, $0.6 billion or three percent to $20.7 billion.
