New orders up, shipments down

New orders for manufactured durable goods in November increased $3.1 billion, or 1.6 percent, to $198.9 billion, the US Department of Commerce reported today.
This followed a 0.9 percent October decrease. Year-to-date, new orders for 2004 were 11.1 percent above the same period a year ago. Transportation equipment had the largest increase, $4.3 billion, or 8.2 percent, to $57.1 billion, due mainly to non-defense aircraft and parts, which increased $3.8 billion.
Shipments decreased $0.5 billion, or 0.2 percent, to $199.4 billion, following a 0.3 percent October increase. Shipments for the January-to-November 2004 period were 10.4 percent above the same period a year ago. Machinery, down following two consecutive increases, had the largest decrease, $0.9 billion, or 3.5 percent, to $24.9 billion.
