Ford will recall 792,000 pickups and sport utility vehicles because of the potential for the cruise control switch to short circuit and pose a fire hazard.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration received 36 reports of fires caused by the defect, but no injuries were reported.
792,000 of the 2000-model Ford F-150 pickups and Ford Expeditions are affected, as well as 2001-model F-Series Supercrew trucks.
Next month, Ford will notify owners of the recall to deactivate the cruise control switch. The company will later notify owners when they can get their switches replaced, after the company receives an adequate supply of replacement switches.
