Orion Bus Industries has completed delivery of the first of two production orders for hybrid electric buses destined for New York City’s transit agency.
This initial run of 125 vehicles has already shown an impact thanks to Hybridrive, a BAE Systems electric/diesel propulsion system. The hybrids have improved fuel economy by 30 percent and generate 90 percent less particulate matter and 30 percent fewer greenhouse gases than their diesel-only ancestors. The system propels the bus with a single electric motor that is powered by a diesel-driven generator and an energy storage unit.
The Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) will boast the world’s largest fleet of hybrid buses by the end of this year when Orion and BAE deliver 200 additional buses.
