Manufacturing growth fuels driver shortage

Manufacturing in the Midwest must be on the up.

With increasing output leaving factories in the area, transportation and logistics provider Schneider National Inc., is having to host a career fair to fill 100 professional truck driving positions.

The company’s growth is fueled by an expanding relationship with Guardian Industries, a leader in the global glass industry. Most of the newly-hired employees will work for Schneider National’s Specialized division, hauling flat glass from Guardian’s DeWitt manufacturing plant in Iowa. Additional drivers will be hired to serve numerous other accounts in the region, including Family Dollar in Maquoketa.

“The current shortage of drivers across the transportation industry, combined with the increase in Guardian and other customers’ overall outbound shipments, has prompted the need for a substantial increase in owner-operators and specialized drivers in the region,” said Rob Reich, vice president of enterprise recruiting at Schneider National.
