The Canadian federal government is committing $200 million and the Ontario government is committing up to $235 million toward a $2.5-billion General Motors project that will create 500 new Canadian jobs.
The Beacon Project by General Motors of Canada Limited (GMCL) will create 500 new jobs in Ingersoll, Oshawa and St. Catharines, Ontario. The project also establishes the Automotive Centre of Excellence at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology in Oshawa, to better link auto suppliers, universities, researchers and students in the areas of automotive engineering, design and innovation.
Ontario's investment is part of Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty’s government's $500-million Automotive Investment Strategy, which supports leading-edge auto manufacturing projects that are worth more than $300 million in investment or that create or retain more than 300 jobs.
In 2004, Ford Canada announced a $1-billion expansion of its Oakville, Ontario, plant. It received $100 million each from the Ontario and the federal government.
