Unemployment filings on the rise again

First-time unemployment filings increased by 17,000, to a total of 327,000, for the week ending March 5, the US Department of Labor reported today.

Just last month, first-time filings had reached their lowest level since October 2000. For the previous week ending February 26, no states reported a rise in manufacturing layoffs. Two states reported a drop during that period: Georgia and Wisconsin.

The current overall unemployment rate is 5.4 percent, reported earlier this month by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. In January, the most recent month for which figures are available, the lowest state unemployment rates were in Hawaii, at three percent, and North Dakota and Virginia, at 3.3 percent each. The states with the highest jobless rates were Alaska, at 7.4 percent; Michigan and Mississippi, at 7.1 percent each; and South Carolina, at seven percent.
