Riviana Foods announced today that Joseph A. Hafner Jr., its president and chief executive officer since 1984, has elected to retire, effective immediately, and will assume a new role as non- executive chairman of Riviana's Board.
W. David Hanks, executive vice president, has been named to succeed Hafner.
“Under Joe's leadership, Riviana has become an acknowledged leader in the rice industry and is one of the world's largest distributors of packaged rice,” said Antonio Hernandez Callejas, vice chairman and chief executive officer of leading Spanish food group Ebro Puelva, S.A., which acquired the Riviana in September 2004. “Today, Riviana is the volume leader in the US retail rice category, and its brands are among America's most recognized names for quality rice products. The company has also expanded its geographic reach, with growing international businesses."
Hafner joined Riviana in 1972 and was elected president in 1980 and chief executive officer in 1984. He has been a director since 1986.
Riviana’s principal rice brands include Mahatma, Carolina, and Success. The company has additional food operations in Central America.
