In a Washington ceremony, President George W. Bush announced his choice of US Representative Rob Portman (R-OH) to be the next US trade representative, replacing current rep Robert Zoellick, who is leaving to become US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice’s deputy.
In addition to a 12-year career as a US Represent-
ative, Portman has a long history with both Bush administrations. He worked for George H.W. Bush’s unsuccessful 1980 presidential campaign, and later worked in the first Bush administration. He also assisted Vice President Dick Cheney in preparing for his televised debate with then-US Senator John Edwards (D-NC) during his campaign last year, and he campaigned for Bush in Ohio, the third-largest manufacturing state. That state in the end proved crucial to Bush’s 2004 re-election, which in a close vote gave its key 20 electoral votes to Bush by a razor-thin margin.
“As an Ohioan, Rob knows firsthand that millions of American jobs depend on exports, including one in every five factory jobs,” said Bush in a White House ceremony. “Our country is home to about five percent of the world’s population, and that means 95 percent of our potential customers are abroad. To keep our economy growing and creating jobs, we need to continue opening foreign markets to American products.”
“Open markets and better trade relations are key components to a more peaceful, a more stable and a more prosperous world,” said Portman at the ceremony. “Through expanded trade, the roots of democracy and freedom are deepened. And here at home, trade policy opens markets to create jobs, a higher standard of living and greater economic growth.”
Portman is expected to be easily confirmed by a US Senate vote.
