Toyota boosts jobs, investment in Michigan

Toyota’s plan to invest $150 million in a new state-of-the-art research and development facility comes as some relief to a state beset by manufacturing layoffs and plant closings.

Heralded as the latest success by Governor Jennifer Granholm and her efforts to breathe life back into Michigan’s automotive industry, the Toyota project is expected to create 670 new jobs. The R&D facility will be located in York Township and will become part of Toyota Technical Center USA, Inc. TTC was established in 1977 with headquarters in Ann Arbor.

Toyota will benefit from a $38.9 million incentive package put together by the Granholm administration. "Toyota's investment here underscores Michigan's importance as a vital center of the global auto industry," Granholm said. "This decision is a testament to this state's comprehensive and aggressive strategy for attracting

and retaining automotive investment and jobs."

The TTC project is the latest in several new automotive industry investments in Michigan. Along with TTC, investments by companies such as DaimlerChrysler, General Motors, Nissan, and Detroit Diesel are expected to save an estimated 27,000 Michigan jobs.
