UAVs to fly with FLIR

FLIR Systems, Inc. announced a contract to outfit the US Army’s Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) with the company’s latest thermal imaging equipment.

The contract, valued at $13 million, charges FLIR with the task of providing the US Army Research Development & Engineering Command (RDECOM) with an advanced infrared system for use on UAVs.

With their small size, increased loitering time, and relative low cost, UAVs have become a popular alternative to piloted aircraft for intelligence gathering missions. To further increase the capabilities of these aircraft, the Army has stipulated that it wants long range performance, color visible imaging, and advanced laser capabilities from FLIR’s unit. Work will begin immediately at FLIR’s facility in Billerica, MA, and is expected to span a three year period.
