The number of first-time claims for unemployment benefits dropped by 36,000 last week, the biggest drop since 2002, according to the US Department of Labor.
For the week ending April 16, the number of initial claims was 296,000, a decrease of 36,000 from the previous week's 332,000.
Manufacturing-sector unemployment filings for the previous week ending April 9, however, showed increases in several states, including Virginia, Indiana, Michigan (in the auto industry), Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Texas, and Pennsylvania. Wisconsin reported an decrease in filing due to manufacturing layoffs for that same week.
The current overall unemployment rate is 5.2 percent, reported earlier this month by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics.
