US Department of Defense won’t stomach Nexium prices

UK pharmaceutical manufacturer AstraZeneca is feeling a bit sick to its stomach as the US Department of Defense announced plans to stop using the company’s popular heartburn and ulcer drug Nexium starting this summer, due to its high cost.

A switch to similar, less-expensive drugs, such as generic Prilosec, could save the Department tens of millions of dollars annually. The Department’s paharmaceutical budget currently runs to some $5 billion per year. According to the Washington Post, it’s the first time the Pentagon had decided for financial reasons to discontinue its use of a licensed drug in the US armed forces’ formulary.

Overall, Nexium is still experiencing growth with its best-selling “purple pill.” In the US market in the first quarter of 2005, the company saw its dispensed Nexium tablet volume grow by 15 percent.

AstraZeneca employs some 15,000 people at 30 manufacturing sites in 20 countries worldwide.
