DRS Technologies has been awarded a total of $25 million in contracts to design and produce power control equipment for US Navy combat surface ships and submarines.
The contracts were awarded by the US Navy and other prime contractors, including shipyards and design agents. DRS will design, manufacture, and test advanced instrumentation and control equipment, machinery and throttle control equipment, variable and fixed-speed motor control equipment, power distribution components and power conversion equipment for low- and medium-voltage shipboard electric plants supporting U.S. Navy combatant submarines and surface ships. Work for these contracts will be performed by the company's DRS Power & Control Technologies unit in Milwaukee, WI, and Danbury, CT.
"These awards reflect our position as a key supplier of power systems to the U.S. Navy shipbuilding industry, both as a leading force in the technology refresh of the existing fleet and as a major participant in shaping the future of the Navy's high-performance integrated electrical systems," said Steven T. Schorer, president of DRS's C4I Group. "DRS's power systems equipment is vital to supporting shipboard propulsion, machinery, power control, conversion and distribution systems for current and future classes of surface and subsurface combatants. These awards support our strategic intent to be a comprehensive supplier of ship electric plant systems, including all associated integration and support services."
DRS’s power equipment fits in well with the Navy’s vision of the future of naval warfare: an electric warship that can transfer power from ship propulsion to advanced weapons, sensors, and countermeasures. The Navy hopes these “force multiplier” technologies will allow their forces to maintain technical superiority in the 21st century.
