The number of first-time claims for unemployment benefits dropped by 21,000 last week, according to the US Department of Labor, countering a 27,000 increase in claims the previous week, which had been the largest jump since early 2004.
For the week ending June 4, the number of initial claims was 330,000, a decrease from the previous week.
Manufacturing-sector unemployment filings for the previous week ending May 28 showed increases in several states, including Michigan (in the auto industry), Tennessee, Florida, Texas, Missouri, Kentucky, and Pennsylvania.
The current overall unemployment rate is 5.1 percent, reported last Friday by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics.
