Leading lift-truck maker Crown Equipment signed a memorandum of understanding with the government of China to build a manufacturing plant in the Suzhou New District, a high-tech industrial park located in the city of Suzhou, west of Shanghai, China.
Construction of the new facility will begin after the State Council of China approves Crown’s application for a business license. The new facility will manufacture and export several smaller models of the Crown product range. Crown will also establish a retail operation at this location to provide sales and service support to the local market, as well as supporting existing Crown customers with locations in China.
“In order to further improve Crown’s ability to compete in the global market and to position ourselves to participate in the rapidly growing Chinese market, we needed to establish a physical presence in China,” said James D. Moran, Crown senior vice president.
In the past, Galway, Ireland, had been the primary manufacturing facility for the production of Crown’s smaller range of trucks. As construction of the new China facility is completed, Crown will wind down production at the Galway facility.
Crown is the number-one brand of electric lift trucks in the world and the sixth-largest manufacturer of material handling equipment. Headquartered in New Bremen, OH, Crown lift trucks are manufactured and sold worldwide.
