The US Food and Drug Administration announced that it has received some 38 reports of a rare condition, called non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy, among users of Pfizer’s impotency drug Viagra. The condition causes permanent blindness.
The FDA also has received four reports of blindness among users of Eli Lilly’s impotency drug Cialis, and one report from a man taking GlaxoSmithKline’s Levitra.
Viagra has been used by more than 23 million men worldwide since its introduction in 1998. It is unknown whether there is a definite link between the drugs and the rare condition, but reports of a possible link go as far back as 2001.
Pfizer is currently weighing a label change to include a warning, though the company stressed that there was no proof of a causal link. Viagra had $1.68 billion in sales last year.
Coincidentally, Pfizer had announced earlier the same week that it had entered into a drug-discovery collaboration with Isis Pharmaceuticals to identify second-generation antisense drugs for the treatment of ophthalmic disease.
