Qatar Airways flies with Airbus A350

Qatar Airways announced today that it has chosen to place an order for the Airbus A350 over Boeing's 787 Dreamliner.

The airline decided to purchase up to 60 of the A350s, but still plans to order at least 20 Boeing 777s. Boeing has some 266 orders and commitments for its Dreamliner from other customers.

Before this, Airbus had only 10 nonbinding orders for the A350, and had announced delays in getting aircraft to several airline customers.

In June 2003, the airline signed a $5.1 billion agreement with Airbus for an additional 34 aircraft, giving the airline a fleet of 52 Airbus aircraft by the end of 2008. In 2004, it will take delivery of 12 new Airbus aircraft. The airline also signed a $1.2 billion deal for two of Airbus’s superjumbo A380s, which will become the flagships of its fleet when they are delivered in early 2009.

The Airbus A350s will be delivered to Qatar Airways between 2010 and 2015. The Boeing 777s will be delivered between 2007 and 2010.
