Experts in lean manufacturing from around the country are getting together for a “Blitz Week” next month at the International Headquarters of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) in Dearborn, MI, to develop the first ever Lean Certification for manufacturing professionals.
The new Lean Certification will comprise four levels. The first measures knowledge of lean principles. The second level requires candidates to apply lean principles to drive improvements that show measurable results. The third level is for senior employees/team leaders who must orchestrate the transformation of a complete value stream. The highest level of certification is for those who have authority over assets, processes and people, and show a solid understanding of all aspects of lean transformation across the entire enterprise.
The SME, along with the Association for Manufacturing Excellence (AME) and The Shingo Prize for Excellence in Manufacturing, are collaborating with industry and academia to develop the new program, which is scheduled for launch in March 2006 with the first certification exams being offered in Los Angeles.
