Nissan announced recently that it is expanding its plans for the Canton, Mississippi manufacturing car plant. The revised plans include 1,300 new jobs and an increase in annual production to 400,000 vehicles a year. The plant will open in the spring of 2003.
The extension of the plant in Canton is consistent with Nissan’s mission to increase visibility and presence in North America, according to Emil Hassan, Nissan’s senior vice president of North American manufacturing, purchasing, quality, and logistics.
The announcement was made after Mississippi lawmakers approved a $68 million package of incentives. The expanded plant will build full-size pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles for Nissan and Infiniti, as well as the next generation Nissan Quest minivan. The plant will begin manufacturing the Altima sedan in 2004.
The $68 million package allows for $23.5 million for worker training; $22.5 million for road, water system, and other infrastructure improvements; $12 million to prepare the site; and $10 million for a vehicle preparation facility.
