Boeing team wins Army tactile radio contract

The US Army’s Communications-Electronics Command recently awarded the Boeing team a contract to develop the Joint Tactical Radio System (JTRS), a series of software reprogrammable radios that will greatly improve simultaneous voice, video, and data communications capabilities for varied mission requirements.

"This win is a tremendous achievement for the Boeing-led team which has worked diligently to develop an innovative, affordable systems solution that will enhance the effectiveness of tomorrow's warfighter," said Allen Ashby, vice president and general manager of Boeing’s Battle Management/Command, Control, and Communications and Strategic Systems business unit. "We have partnered with the best that industry has to offer, and stand ready to successfully meet the challenges associated with the future battlespace.”

The new communications system will set the stage for all future Department of Defense tactical radios. The contract is expected to span a number of years and the initial phases will exceed $2 billion.

The team was chosen on account of its flexible system architecture design, modular approach, and Boeing’s proven experience in large-scale systems integration. Team members, made up of the finest air and ground systems integrators and leading hardware providers, include TRW Tactical Systems Division, Rockwell Collins Government Systems Division, and BAE Systems Communications, Navigation, and Identification Division. Boeing will be responsible for overall systems architecture and design, systems engineering, communications integration, and program management of the project.
