Big Three automaker Ford announced plans to fire 400 US white-collar employees, as part of a plan to reduce its North American workforce by 2,750 jobs by the end of 2005.
According to a company spokesman, the cuts mark the first time in three decades that Ford has fired so many of its white-collar workers.
“Initially, we hoped to achieve our goals through attrition, reduced hiring and other voluntary means,” wrote Ford President and Chief Operating Officer Jim Padilla in an e-mail to midlevel and senior managers, telling them of the cuts earlier this month. “Despite our best efforts, it became clear that getting to our targets required a number of involuntary separations.”
Ford has been struggling lately with an economic downturn, recently reporting a $907 million loss in its second quarter.
