Initial unemployment filings spike post-Katrina

First-time unemployment filings rose by 71,000 to 398,000 for the week ending September 10, the US Department of Labor reported today, with 68,000 of those filings due directly to Hurricane Katrina.

For the previous week ending September 3, Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana, and Texas also reported a spike for the same period. Meanwhile, Michigan, New York, and Kentucky reported a drop in manufacturing-sector layoffs for that week.

The current overall unemployment rate is 4.9 percent, reported earlier this month by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics.
