DaimlerChrysler recalls 100,000-plus Jeep Grand Cherokees

Automaker DaimlerChrysler told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that it would recall more than 100,000 Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs, due to a risk of engine fires.

The manufacturer will recall 2005-model year Grand Cherokees with 3.7-liter engines and automatic transmissions. In the recalled vehicles, condensed water from the air conditioning system could drip into the transmission fluid, leading to a shaking in the transmission. The transmission operating at higher temperatures could shoot transmission fluid onto high-temperature engine parts, which could start an engine fire.

DaimlerChrysler had four reports of fires in the vehicles from rental agency Dollar Rent a Car in Hawaii, California, and Washington state. All owners of the recalled vehicles will be notified in October.
