The world’s largest airplane manufacturers, Boeing and Airbus, are beginning to recover balance after the drop in orders they experienced after 9/11.
After the attacks, Boeing planned to lay off 30,000 employees and drastically reduce production costs. Since then, it has laid off 28,500 workers and believes that layoffs will begin to taper off. With the economy becoming more stable, Boeing officials expect aircraft production to rebound by 2004.
Boeing, based in Chicago, has delivered 222 passenger jets since January. The leading European jet manufacturer, Airbus, has delivered 160 jets, and it will distribute 300 more before the year is through.
