Cell phone and electronics manufacturer Motorola announced that it is cutting 1,900 manufacturing jobs at 29 different locations in the US and abroad as part of a larger effort to consolidate supply-chain facilities and improve operating efficiency.
The layoffs, which started in July, will be distributed over facilities in more than 20 countries. It will also add an approximately equal number of engineering and marketing jobs.
As part of the consolidation plan, one of the company’s South Korean manufacturing plants is being shifted to a design center, and one distribution center in Elgin, IL, is being turned into a design facility.
