Although the regional manufacturing index for Kansas City fell to 5 in June from 19 in May, it still shows significant improvement since the index remained at -5 for the past two years, according to the Kansas City federal reserve.
Demand for machine tools, which are used in shaping metal for car engines and TVs, increased in May to $185.67 million, up 7.7% from April. However, the welcomed increase is 29.8% less than May 2001. Year to date, machine tool demand decreased 31.1%.
