New tests to cut staff turnover

Job performance tests aimed at improving employee selection and saving the $5000 to $10000 it costs to replace a production worker have been developed by the Employers Association (EA) and consulting form Discovery Enterprises
The Manufacturing Applicant Profile System (MAPS) measures the basic skills and traits of job candidates. Research for the tests, involving surveys of HR professionals and observation of production workers at 31 manufacturing firms, took place over three years. The tests were administered to 949 production workers at nine manufacturing companies in Minnesota, Illinois, and Michigan, and results indicated they were effective at predicting job performance.
"We believe companies using MAPS as part of a thorough employee selection program will see their hiring results improve and substantially reduce costs related to poor employee selection," says Joe Spartz, EA senior manager. The testing program is currently being implemented at Minnesota-based Medtronic's largest plant. According to Dave Mentz, HR director, the company's main motivation in deploying the program is to decrease employee turnover and increase the quality of new hires, leading to greater worker productivity.
EA plans to add to the currently available tests for machine operators and assemblers by introducing tests for product and material handlers. Computer-based versions will be available soon. More information is available at www.employersinc.com/consult/maps.html
