Calling President Bush’s proposals to punish business and accounting wrongdoing more aggressively “tough but sensible,” Jerry Jasinowski, president of the National Association of Manufacturers, said there is no question that the continuing financial and accounting scandals are taking a toll on public confidence and could undermine the economic recovery.
“It is important that the President and Congress work together toward the objective of restoring confidence in business and accounting without creating new jurisdictional conflicts,” Jasinowski cautioned. “We support the president’s call for a strengthened Securities and Exchange Commission as well as an accounting review board, but the authority and responsibility of each should be carefully defined to avoid conflict and confusion.”
