American Biofuels, L.L.C. expects to increase biodiesel production to 40,000,000 gallons per year in 2006. This is a significant leap, as total biodiesel production in the United States in 2005 was only 66-million gallons.
Two factors seem to be afoot.
First, biodiesel now sells at or below the price of regular diesel, pushing it from a specialty market into the mainstream.
Second, Daimler Chrysler has given it the nod. The automaker is the first to approve the use of B-20 fuel (20% biodiesel and 80% diesel) for its commercial fleet customers including military and government vehicles. Chrysler Group President and CEO Tom LaSorda believes that "Biofuels represent a huge opportunity to reduce consumption and our dependence on foreign oil."
