Global Trade: China president pays calls on Boeing, Microsoft, then President

Chinese President Hu Jintao began his US visit on Tuesday, April 18 in Washington State, by greeting America’s manufacturers, visiting Microsoft and Boeing before jetting to Washington D.C.

The Microsoft visit appeared measuredly genial, with Hu touring the plant, calling Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates a “friend of China.” Gates and CEO Steve Ballmer were mum about the closed door sessions, in which Hu reportedly reassured Gates and Ballmer that China is serious about protecting intellectual property rights. This in reaction to Microsoft’s ongoing battle against software piracy in the Chinese market. Some, but not all Chinese computer manufacturers, have pledged to ship computers with licensed Windows installations.

Gates held a dinner at his home for 100+ guests, including such manufacturers as Boeing and Weyerhauser, and interestingly, Starbucks Chairman Howard Shultz. The coffee chain recently won a copyright infringement case in China, against Chinese nationals – one of a handful of such victories.

On Wednesday, Hu toured the Boeing plant in Everett, WA, where he was briefed on the Boeing 787. Reportedly, China only recently purchased 80 of the jet currently under development which the company touts as its "super-efficient airliner."

China recently signed a deal with the company to buy 80 Boeing jets, and Boeing projects that China will require 2,600 new airplanes over 20 years. The significance of China’s Boeing purchase is that the smaller Airbus jets were popularly perceived as fuel efficient and perfectlys suited to China’s emerging domestic airlines.
