Health care giant Abbott plans to build a $280 million state-of-the-art nutritional powder manufacturing facility in Singapore. The Abbott Nutrition International plant will be Abbott’s first major capital investment in Asia and its largest ever nutritional investment.
The Singapore facility will satisfy the growing demand for Abbott’s nutritional products in the region. Asia contributes a third of the demand in the $13 billion worldwide paediatric market. "Asia is one of the fastest growing markets for Abbott’s nutrition business and in order to meet the increasing needs of consumers, we recognized that we had to begin manufacturing in the region," said John Ginascol, Divisional Vice President, Global Supply Chain, Abbott Nutrition International. "We chose Singapore for its strategic location as a regional distribution hub, its business-friendly environment, and its highly motivated and educated workforce."
The new plant will produce hallmark Abbott brands including Similac Advance, PediaSure, Gain and Grow. Work on the plant will start next month, and it is expected to be operational by the end of 2008.
