GM retires Hummer H1

General Motors has announced that production of its gigantic Hummer “Alpha”, known as the H1, will cease this month, after 14 years.

Based on the vehicle designed for the US army, the 3.7 ton, 6.6 liter, $150,000 gas guzzler has suffered a decline in demand since oil prices have been on the rise. The Hummer “Alpha” has been produced by a collaboration of GM with AM General LLC, the manufacturer of the army vehicle, since 1999.

"Unfortunately, in recent years, the production and actual retail sale of the Hummer H1 have fallen to a level between 200 and 300 vehicles per year," said James Armour, president and chief executive officer of AM General. "At that level of sales, the GM dealers tell us that with a vehicle that costs $145,000-$150,000 each, it just becomes too difficult to find customers willing to pay for that vehicle ... especially since we have not been able to change the body style for the last 14 years."

GM will continue to make the smaller, more fuel efficient H2 and H3 models, which cost about $55,000 and $30,000 respectively.
