Boeing, the world’s largest aircraft manufacturer, plans to combine its limping space and communications unit with its boom-bust military plane and missiles unit.
The new defense unit, which will be headquartered in St. Louis, Miss., will employ 78,600 workers and is forecasted to have annual revenues of $23 billion.
The space and communication unit had suffered a hit in production due to declining demand in the commercial satellite business. By combining the two units, Boeing’s new defense system will offer a wider range of solutions to its customers in addition to hardware. Phil Condit, CEO, stated that in order for the unmanned military systems to be really effective they have to operate inside one information system, which is provided by the space and communications group.
