Symbol Technologies in mid-May sold its 500,000th MC9000 mobile computer, sold to longstanding customer Coca-Cola Enterprises. This is a very significant milestone, given that the MC9000 line is less than three years old.
“To give you a scale and scope of what that number 500,000 means in industry, if you took all the business that the MC9000 has generated, as a separate company” and disregarding the rest of Symbol’s product line, “we’d still be bigger than our largest competitor,” claims Symbol’s Mark Chellis, director of mobile computing. “And with the run rates, we’re confident of reaching the one million mark in early 2007, that’s the momentum this product has.” According to VDC, the rugged mobile computing market is expected to grow at a robust 8.5% CAGR through 2008, reaching almost $5.1 billion.
"The Symbol MC9000 mobile computer is an integral part of our overall mobile solution,” says Jim Long, Manager, Mobile Computing Services, Coca-Cola Enterprises. “The new technology allows us to deliver applications with new functionality, such as signature capture and e-documents, that make our business more effective." Chief among Coca-Cola’s uses are delivery and routing, in which a driver can make one delivery and receive information on the next. “So it becomes a vital business tool and makes the Coca Cola delivery person very efficient,” says Chellis, as well as relaying instantaneous accounting data to Coca-Cola’s ERP system.
One particularly valuable feature, according to Chellis, is that “It’s purpose-built for a full shift. Whatever instrument we create, you don’t have to change the batteries every two hours. So we can offer industry standard operating systems and processors, and it still gets a full shift life, which is incredibly important in business.”
