Tobacco giant Philip Morris of Charlotte, NC, has fired workers at two of its plants, which those workers allege was for withdrawing money from PM’s deferred profit-sharing plan.
The Charlotte Observer says it has confirmed 14 firings at PM’s concord plant, where the paper counts up to 70 firings since last Fall.
PM’s reasoning is that those employees falsified applications to make the withdrawals, for example, applying for withdrawals for home purchases, then using the money for other purposes.
The Concord NC plant employs 2,600 people, and its Richmond, VA plant and headquarters employs 6,400.
