Airbus is at least considering discontinuing some product lines, and Co-Chief Executive Thomas Enders told The Financial Times Deutschland that he "can't rule out" dumping the A350 XWB. This jumbo-liner was Airbus's rival to the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, due for delivery in 2008.
Airbus is behind schedule with the A350, and behind Boeing in global sales. The United Arab Emirates has purportedly cancelled or at least reduced its order, registering its annoyance at the increasingly longer delays, now longer than six months.
What caused the delays?
Interestingly, it might have been a bit of cheapness on Airbus's part. The company did not use the 3D modeling software that Boeing uses, to reportedly smooth results. Airbus has found that designs, particularly in wire, do not match, or anticipate the greater bulk of different materials and components.
Airbus' averge time to market is seven years, versus Boeing's five. The two have jockied for supremacy for years, this being the first time on record that one has pulled this far ahead.
