Gazprom, the Russian natural gas monopoly, has rejected the bids of five western oil companies, including Chevron and Konoko. Gazprom will develop its Shtokman natural gas field without outside help.
In late September, Gazprom also announced it would direct LNG slated for the US to neighboring Europe instead.
This is a retaliation against the US for, among other political slights -
* US sanctions against a Russian arms export agency;
* Similar sanctions against Russian aircraft maker Sukhoi.
Both organizations are believed to have supplied Iran - hence the US's refusal to support Russia's entry into the World Trade Organization.
