Chrysler boosts productivity by 7.6% in one year

A focus on strategic manufacturing at Chrysler has led to a 7.6% productivity this year, according to Richard Chow-Wah, vice president of powertrain operations.

The initiative involves going beyond the plant floor to work with all areas of the company that affect manufacturing output later on. “The key to manufacturing efficiency is that you can’t do it alone,” said Chow-Wah. “By working directly with engineering, and taking a total system approach, we are able to design the labor content out of the vehicle rather than vice-versa.”

During a speech Monday at the 2002 Management Briefing Seminars in Traverse City, Michigan, Chow-Wah explained that Chrysler’s entire manufacturing organization is involved in a transition to rethink production processes, eliminate unneeded tasks, and provide flawless execution on every level. The new approach will involve producing more than one product from a different platform in the same assembly plant, a first for the company.
