Manufacturers perceive benefit from extranets

A recent survey of 100 manufacturers by Emercent Solutions, a technology and transaction integration firm, revealed that companies are positive about their investment in dealer extranets.

The benefits cited by respondents include reduced headcount, more contact with dealers, less paperwork, and improved customer satisfaction. Just over half of those surveyed either have a dealer-focused extranet or intend to develop one.

A wide variety of features are offered on the extranets, including electronic feedback, marketing material, training information, industry news, and account information. The manufacturers, which included makers of construction equipment, agricultural equipment, trucks, boats, recreational vehicles, and all-terrain vehicles, used both internal and external resources to develop their sites.

Respondents cited maintenance, upgrading, and training as the largest operational challenges of extranets. A majority of companies reported that all of their dealers had access to the extranet and said they had a dealer-adoption rate of 50% or higher. Ninety percent of companies said they had received positive feedback on the site from their dealers.
