Manufacturers and the

Forbes magazine is calling 2006 "The Year of the Deal," observing that 2006 has been the biggest year ever for global mergers and acquisitions. That owed largely to private equity deals, and in communications, web and banking, chiefly. But a few manufacturers make the list as well.

AT&T's $83 billion bid for BellSouth was the largest transaction announced this year. The largest manufacturer deal was in Europe, being the $39.5 billion bid by Mittal Steel for Arcelor.

European M&As grew 18% to a new record of $1.3 trillion, comprising 40% of global merger activity. with deals in Asia and outside of Japan at a record $323 billion, or 10% of global M&A. U.S. mergers total $1.2 trillion, down 21% from the $1.53 trillion announced in all of 2000 and only accounting for 36% of worldwide merger activity, compared to 46% just six years ago.
