Washington, DC, November 26, 2006—As the Black Friday weekend comes to a close, online retailers are gearing up for Cyber Monday, the ceremonial kickoff to the online holiday shopping season. According to a Shop.org survey, conducted this weekend by BIGresearch, 60.7 million consumers plan to shop online from home or at work tomorrow in what is expected to be one of the biggest online shopping days of the year.
“While traditional retailers used Black Friday promotions to pack the stores this weekend, online retailers are using Cyber Monday to debut holiday merchandise and offer virtual doorbusters,” said Scott Silverman, Executive Director of Shop.org. “On Cyber Monday, consumers will find specials ranging from percentages off entire websites to specific savings on big-ticket items.”
Free shipping is also expected to be a big draw, as 83.0 percent of online retailers plan to offer some kind of free shipping promotion during the holiday season, according to the Shop.org/Shopzilla eHoliday Mood Study.
Tens of thousands of holiday shoppers have already visited www.cybermonday.com, a website launched last week by Shop.org. On the site, more than 400 retailers feature special promotions to encourage shoppers to point and click their way through the holiday shopping season. CyberMonday.com, powered by Mall Networks, was created as a one-stop shop for consumers looking for the best online holiday promotions.
Coincidentally, a recent BIGresearch survey also found that 61 million people plan to shop online from work during the holiday season. In response to that trend, the National Retail Federation will be marking Cyber Monday with a Shop@Lunch celebration tomorrow from 11:30-2:00. More than 200 consumers are expected to attend the event, which will feature personal shoppers and gift card giveaways from retailers like Newegg.com, Barnes & Noble, Lenox, and Discovery Channel Stores.*
“Shoppers who fought the crowds at the mall all weekend will find a welcome reprieve online on Cyber Monday,” said Phil Rist, Vice President of Strategy for BIGresearch. “Consumers who couldn’t find what they were looking for in the stores will be flooding websites on Cyber Monday to shop for holiday gifts, research products and compare prices.”
About the Surveys
The survey about consumer shopping on Cyber Monday, which polled 3,090 consumers, was conducted for NRF by BIGresearch from November 23-25, 2006. The survey on consumer shopping at work polled 8.090 consumers and was conducted for Shop.org by BIGresearch from November 1-8, 2006. Both polls have a margin of error of plus or minus 1.5 percent.
The eHoliday Mood Study, now in its fifth year, is the only holiday measurement tool based on data provided directly from online retailers in addition to consumer data. The Study, conducted by BizRate Research, a division of Shopzilla, for Shop.org, was designed to gauge consumer behavior and online retailers’ success during the winter holiday season. The poll of 80 online retailers, all members of Shop.org, was conducted September 18-21, 2006.
